How Internet Access Became Central in Oskarisi’s Elections

Adam Vasilčuḱi

Mšrali Raodenoba - Over the weekend, Giorgi Abašiže, an incumbent Agausian Liberal regional councilor from Oskarisi, organized a party campaign event outside an internet cafe in the city of Âgošḱi. The event, drawing a crowd of constituents, highlighted the growing importance of internet access in the region. Abašiže spoke about the power of the internet, emphasizing its role in education, business, and civic engagement. He promised to expand broadband coverage to even the most remote areas of Oskarisi, arguing that digital connectivity was a fundamental right in the modern age.

Abašiže, one of only two Agausian Liberals in the regional council, aims to leverage the issue of internet connectivity as a key local issue. In many parts of Agausia, internet services are extremely slow due to inadequate infrastructure, and in some areas, prices are high for subpar services. This has become a significant point of contention for Abašiže and his party, who are using it to critique the ruling coalition led by the Social Democrats (SDs).

Currently, the region is governed by a Social Democratic Governor, and Âgošḱi itself has a Social Democratic mayor. Despite the SDs' dominance, polls indicate a surge in support for right-leaning and opposition parties, showing them polling 20 points above the governing and left-leaning parties. This shift in public sentiment has given the Agausian Liberals, including Abašiže, a potential opening to challenge the status quo.

The Oskarisi region, while having a slight left-leaning inclination, is considered a swing region in the upcoming election. Abašiže's focus on improving internet access is seen as a strategic move to gain support from frustrated residents who have long dealt with connectivity issues. By positioning himself as a champion of digital rights and infrastructure development, he hopes to attract voters who are dissatisfied with the current administration's handling of the issue.

As the election approaches, the debate over internet access is expected to intensify, with both the Social Democrats and Agausian Liberals making their cases to the electorate. Abašiže's campaign promises to prioritize this issue could resonate strongly with voters, potentially reshaping the political landscape in Oskarisi.
