Will Agausia be next?

 Author: Vit́o T́irbučkebi

Tamara - On Sunday an announcement, described as "historic," from the European Commission essentially gave the green light for Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia to join the European Union (EU) in the future. And while that is great news, depending on your perspective, for those three countries it does leave officials in Tamara in a delicate situation.

Agausia is intrinsically linked to the economies of its neighbors, and if Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia were to join the EU that would leave Agausia, Russia, and Turkey as the only Black Sea countries outside of the union. This has unprecedented consequences, as Agausia has been carefully toeing the line between Russia and the West. As the Black Sea becomes dominated by the EU it could force Agausia to either move towards European integration, move closer to Russia, or somehow manage to stay neutral.

According to Agausian economist Maiḱl Ivanopski, "I could see a scenario in which Agausia is forced to choose between fully embracing the west which would result in threats from Russia or turn toward Russia and risk getting rejected by the west. This situation would be unpredictable as EU membership for Agausia is not in the political zeitgeist." The only political party that actively promotes EU integration is the Farmer's and Green's Union, who view the EU's Common Agricultural Policy as a way to help farmers and promote agriculture.

A poll conducted in 2019 found that only 38% of Agausians had a favorable view of the European Union. A more recent poll conducted in January 2022, on the eve of the Russian invasion, 43% of Agausians had a favorable view of the European Union. The future direction of foreign policy in  Agausia now seems unclear, and this unsteadiness will impact the economy in more ways than one.
