Tavšesapari - Thursday morning a spokesperson for Sergei Sumleni announced that the Social Democratic MP, representing Aḱlos’ third district, would be resigning from his seat effective immediately. This announcement came seemingly out of nowhere and no reasoning was provided as to the MP’s decision behind abandoning his seat.
On Friday Sumleni, now officially a former MP, released a statement online explaining the reasoning behind his decision. The statement, addressed to his constituents, began:
It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I must announce my resignation from my position as your Member of Parliament. This decision has not been taken lightly, but circumstances beyond my control have led me to this point. On October eighteenth, I suffered a devastating loss with the passing of my beloved brother Ṕit́er Âḱobiže Sumleni. His sudden departure has left a void in my life that cannot be filled, and I am compelled to take some time away from the responsibilities of public office to grieve and support my family during this difficult period.
Politicians from across the political spectrum have sent their condolences and regards to Sumleni and his family. President Aioviḱara also has reportedly visited the former statesman and his grieving family at his residence in the city of Ḱvenitsëḱali.
This vacancy will trigger a by-election sometime in late November or early December. There have been rumblings and rumors that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Regional Development, Tourism and Local Economies will scheduel the election for November twenty-fifth to coincide with the upcoming local elections.
Sumleni had represented his former district, Aḱlos’ third, since he won it in a by-election in 2015. The election was called after a car accident which resulted in the death of former MP Luḱa Pedrovi (AL). Since flipping the district in 2015 Sumleni had always faced tough reelection campaigns against any Agausian Liberal opponents. The outcome of this by-election, together with the upcoming local elections, could be a bellwether for the governing coalition.
