Tavšesapari - In a soccer stadium, a few kilometers from the Prtiani Mketsëâ International Airport, a few hundred people gathered to attend a rally for presidential hopeful Vladimer Mâḱovi.
Mâḱovi, a right-wing millionaire and self described "populist and family man," is currently tied for third place in the most recent opinion polls. While the polls only give Mâḱovi nine percent, he is one of a few candidate who do not appear to have falling numbers.
Ṕavlo Šemduǵebeli, a local dock worker, attended the rally and spoke to reporters after its conclusion. "I am here because we are seeing a total lack of moral standards by those currently in government. They take everything for themselves and leave little for us. The cost of living keeps going up, and yet the Social Democrats eat and live like pigs."
When asked which policies of Mâḱovi he supported Mr. Šemduǵebeli answered, "Things have not improved in over twenty years we need change. We see what is happening in Ukraine, and we are tired of this international tug-of-war."
Mâḱovi has spent hundreds of thousands worth of euros on PR stunts to paint himself as a hero of ultraorthodox values. As well as tamp down his alleged ties to Russian and Ukranian oligarchs.
In retrospect, Mâḱovi's chances of succeeding in this election are slim. However, his growing support shows a trend of discontent with the status quo.
