Transit workers in three Agausian cities approve strike

Author: Valent́ina Bonḱa

Romda - The Trade Union Federation of Transport and Road Workers, an affiliate of the Agausian Federation of Christian Workers, voted last week whether or not the union would go on strike. Union representatives have cited low salaries and poor working conditions as the reasoning behind their decision in favor of the measure.

On Monday the Ministry of Health, Social and Labor Protections confirmed that the union had voted in favor by a margin of 83% for and 17% against. The ministry ultimately sympathized with strikers but described their move as poorly timed and disastrous for the average day Agausian.

The strike will involve public transport workers from Agausia's three most populated cities, Tamara, Romda, and Mšbuḱâ. Strikers will gather in Tamara, the nation's capital, and plan to protest in front of the Agausian parliament.

Chairman St́epan Giorgini, current leader of the trade union, spoke to reporters hours before the ministry's official announcement. "The demands of our movement are clear, salaries must be raised to compensate for inflation, workers should be properly compensated for overtime, and overall working conditions must be improved."

The Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure and Development, which is responsible for the agencies that oversee public transportation, did not immediately respond to questions and have made no comments. The vote follows weeks of failed negations between union reps and the ministry.
