Parties announce conditions of coalition agreements

Tamara - Over the past few weeks, as coalition talks continue, several parties have made clear their demands for joining a coalition. It appears that the Social Democrats (SD) are attempting to lead a coalition of parties from ideologically centrist to far left, each of whom are looking for concrete concessions and guarantees. Parties will have until February to form coalitions or alliances. If no clear parliamentary majority can be formed new elections will have to be called.

Most recently, on Saturday Pelisâ Ṕet́rosâni, party chair of the New Socialists (AS), signaled that her party would be willing to enter into a coalition provided that the Social Democrats be willing to compromise on some concessions and provide guarantees. One of here requests was that parliament introduce legislation aimed at setting price caps on food. In the last preliminary session such legislation was opposed to by the opposition and a majority of the members of the United Alliance (GA). 

It appears that the Social Democrats will need the help of the New Socialists, United Alliance, and the Farmer's and Green's Union in order to form a parliamentary majority. Somehow all parties will have to compromise if a functioning government is to be formed. The last time the GA and the AS worked together as partners was from 2006 till 2010, and their relationship was rife with arguments and impasses.  

Despite the apparent difficulties ahead, Social Democratic leadership has remained confident in their ability to lead the next government. At this time, it is unclear who will lead the next government. Current Prime Minister, Aṕolona Nebisḱopa, is not likely to lead the next coalition. In recent years her popularity with potential coalition partners has declined, and her exit has long been rumored.
