Police seize 50 kg of heroin in Agausian port

Grëki - On Sunday police forces in the village of Grëki seized fifty kilograms of heroin from a small cargo vessel. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, Regional Development, Tourism and Local Economies, which is in charge of the nation's police force, confirmed that the traffickers were taken into custody without incident after the ship was inspected while docked in Grëki. 

"Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine has disrupted both legal and illegal shipping routes, we have seen more and more traffickers using Agausia as a warehouse for illicit goods." Said Lukasi Velši in a statement from Agausia's National Border Guard. 

 

The National border guard operates a military law-enforcement unit which has been the nation's main drug fighting unit. The statement also revealed that the drugs were likely intended to be both sold domestically, and be sent to mainland Europe via either Russia, or Romania.   

This latest bust comes amid a rise resurgence in the trafficking of heroin from Asia and the Middle East. Since 2019 Agausian officials have confiscated and destroyed over 300 kg of drugs. The overall effects of the war in Ukraine are also likely to drive up demand for drugs, and Agausian officials are looking for ways to get ahead of traffickers - including working with Romanian and Turkish anti-drug units.
