Agausian U.N. representative denies making antisemitic comments

Tamara - The Permanent representative of Agausia to the United Nations, Iosebi Okṕovneli, is facing mounting calls to resign after he was accused of making antisemitic comments. The allegations were made in response to comments Okṕovneli made during a recent speech, which some are claiming contained anti-Jewish rhetoric.

Okṕovneli, who has represented Agausian in the U.N. since 2018, has vehemently denied the accusations and has issued a statement condemning all forms of bigotry and discrimination.

"I categorically deny any accusations of antisemitism," the statement reads. "My comments were taken out of context and misinterpreted by those looking to stir up controversy. As a public figure, I am committed to promoting equality and inclusivity for all communities, including the Jewish community."

The statement also notes Okṕovneli's record of supporting Jewish causes, including attending synagogue services and visiting Israel on diplomatic missions.

Despite the denial, the accusations have sparked widespread outrage and calls for the long-time diplomat to issue a more detailed explanation of their comments. A small but growing voice have even called for Okṕovneli to resign from his position.

The controversy comes at a time when tensions around antisemitism are high, with incidents of hate crimes against Jewish people on the rise in many parts of the world.
