Agausian court approves extradition request of former Bulgarian politician

Author: Mira Ahmâni

Tamara - On Friday the Agausian Supreme Administrative court approved the extradition request of former Bulgarian politician Liubomiri St́oânovi, who is facing corruption charges in his home country. St́oânovi is accused of embezzlement, bribery, and abuse of power during his time in office as an official in the city of Yambol.

The former Bulgarian official was arrested in Agausia last year on an international warrant issued by Bulgarian authorities. Since then, the Bulgarian government has been seeking their extradition, but lawyers for St́oânovi have long argued that their client will not receive a fair trial in their home country.

However, the Agausian court rejected these claims and ruled that the former official will receive a fair trial in Bulgaria. The court also ruled that the individual's human rights would not be violated if they were to be extradited.

The decision has been welcomed by the Bulgarian government, which has long been pushing for the former official's extradition. In a statement, the Bulgarian justice minister praised the Agausian court's ruling, saying that it marked a significant step forward in the fight against corruption in the country.

St́oânovi first fled to Agausia in 2019 after Bulgaria's State Intelligence Agency performed a raid at his home and issued a warrant out for his arrest after a pattern of corruption was discovered. He was arrested in 2022 in Tamara at the request of the Bulgarian government. The former official has plead not guilty and has maintained that he is innocent. The extradition date is to be set by the Bulgarian courts in the coming days.
