Campaigning begins for November elections

Tamara - Monday is the official date that election season begins in Agausia for November's vote for regional councils and non-partisan district administrators. The Agausian Constitution codifies the last Monday in May as the legal start date of campaigning in Agausia. 

 

Prior to this point candidates and parties were permitted to fundraise and make personal statements but were forbidden from taking interviews with reporters regarding their candidacy. Failure to adhere to campaign law can result in large fines and or disqualification of the candidate.

There are a total of eighteen parties contesting for some three-hundred-ninety-eight regional council seats across Agausia's twenty-one regions. Fifteen parties currently hold seats, with the Social Democratic Party holding nearly thirty-three percent of all seats. 

While individually these councils have little legislative power, their elections are often seen as a bellwether for the current government. And since Agausia operates under a closed list proportional representative system, and in turn regional parties can have strong influences on their national party counterparts.

The National Coalition, which consists of Agausia's three opposition parties, are hoping to use the government's low approval rating to drastically improve their numbers in the councils. 

If that were to happen it would put the governing coalition in a perilous position and be seen as a referendum of the legitimacy of the government's mandate.
