Queen Tamar Celebrated Around Agausia

Author: T́anâ Amkvevi

Tamara - Over the past three days, Agausians across the country have been commemorating the Day of Queen Tamar. Officially observed on Sunday, the holiday extends to Monday when a public holiday falls on a weekend. This has given Agausians a three-day weekend to partake in the celebrations.

Tamara's city center came alive with a street market, carnival, and parade, attracting nearly eight hundred thousand guests throughout the long weekend. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, Regional Development, Tourism, and Local Economies proudly announced that there were no major incidents or accidents during the festivities. Minister Mamedovi attributed this success to the "dedicated police force and the goodwill of all Agausian people."

The Day of Queen Tamar serves as a commemoration of the Georgian Queen who ruled over Agausia after the fall of the Byzantine Empire. In Agausia, Queen Tamar holds great significance as a symbol of nationalism. It was during her reign that the Agausian language became deeply ingrained in the national psyche. Additionally, Tamar is revered in religious communities for her role in helping the Principality of Agûzës repel early Ottoman advances.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, then-President Luḱa Ḱaṕanaže (Ind.) declared the Day of Queen Tamar a public holiday in 2003. This decision coincided with Agausia's radical education reforms, which aimed to establish the Agausian language as the primary language in all public institutions, replacing Russian.

Initially, ethnic Russians residing in Agausia declined to participate in the holiday and often protested the events, perceiving them as anti-Russia and nationalist propaganda. However, in recent times, opposition has significantly decreased, and the day is now celebrated and enjoyed by all.
