Tamara - In the wake of escalating tensions arising from Russia's intention to establish a naval base in the disputed Abkhazia region, the Agausian Ministry of Defense has reasserted the significance of upholding the Humdul Strait Agreement. Signed on October 19, 1999, between Agausia and Russia, this diplomatic accord played a critical role in resolving the protracted Humdul Dispute, focusing on the Humdul strait—a vital waterway for both Agausian and Russian travel and trade in the Black Sea.

The Humdul Strait Agreement delineated precise boundaries for territorial waters for both nations, affirming their commitment to safeguarding the civilian and merchant vessels of each nation. The necessity of this commitment has been amplified with Russia's recent announcement to establish a naval base in Abkhazia, a breakaway region in Georgia that has enjoyed Moscow's backing.

The Humdul Strait Agreement was forged in response to a diplomatic conflict that emerged after Agausia declared independence from the Soviet Union on March 4, 1991. The subsequent years were marked by intense negotiations and diplomatic disputes, culminating in the signing of the Humdul Strait Agreement on October 19, 1999, during a meeting between Then Agausian President Benâmin Ševčenḱo and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Sochi.

Fast forward to the present, the leader of the unrecognized breakaway Republic of Abkhazia announced plans for the establishment of a Russian naval base in the region - this amid the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The international community, including Georgia, strongly condemned this plan, labeling it a blatant violation of their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As the Black Sea region experiences rising tensions, particularly with the relocation of Russian vessels and heightened concerns about potential incidents, the Agausian Ministry of Defense emphasizes the enduring relevance and importance of the Humdul Strait Agreement. In a statement to Moscow, Deputy Minister of Defense Ant́o Ṕlemâniḱovi stressed the necessity of cooperative measures to maintain regional peace and security. He emphasized that adhering to established international agreements, such as the Humdul Strait Accord, is pivotal for fostering a peaceful coexistence among nations within the Black Sea region.
