Tamara - A scene of political theatre unfolded Friday on the Parliament floor. The Chairman of the Parliament, Âḱob Ramont́i (SD), was seen visually confused as a measure, which was authored by his coalition, failed as the New Socialists (AS) joined the opposition in opposing the measure.
What was initially anticipated to be a routine parliamentary proceeding swiftly transformed into a battleground of ideologies and economic interests. The last minuet revision of a shipbuilding contract with Norway, a deal viewed as pivotal for Agausia's economic trajectory, became a lightning rod for a clash between political factions.
In Agausia any foreign company that wants to do business with a public and nationalized company must have the contract approved by the national parliament. In 2016 the Norwegian shipping company, Odfjell SE, began negotiations with the Agausia to produce and install specialized parts for three small tanker ships.
The installation was due to occur in Port Ǵrmabmé, but after the years of delay the plans were stalled further and further. In October of last year, when the port was delayed for another two years Odfjell demanded that the Agausian side renegotiate the original contract.
Finally, earlier this year the contract was finalized and sent to parliament for its approval. The original terms of the contract, from the 2018, indicated that nearly 80% of the work was to be done by Agausian public and nationalized companies, with the remaining 20% designated for private companies. The new contract however split the work between the public and private companies 70% to 30%.
When the contract was put before a vote in parliament the vote came in 70 MPs voted in favor, 71 MPs voted against. The New Socialists jointed the opposition and four members abstained from voting.
Chairman Ramont́i expressed his disappointment and frustration at the turn of events, and Social Democrats wasted no time in accusing the New Socialists of setting the coalition up for failure. The contract had received approval from the sole New Socialists MP on the Committee for Foreign Policy and Global Integration, Toma Mikélviči, who voted in favor of advancing the legislation.
On the opposing end, AS leader Pelisâ Ṕet́rosâni defended their stance, asserting that the contract's alteration favored private entities over the nation's own public industries. She argued for a stronger emphasis on nationalization and maintaining the originally intended 80-20 work distribution in favor of nationalized companies. Ṕet́rosâni also argued that a committee vote should not be equated with a floor vote and maintained that no act of political treachery had occurred.
On their part, the Norwegian company stated that they will be willing to revisit negotiations but added that the clock is running for the Agausian side.
