Magistrate Council Divided Over Nominee’s Business Ties

Tamara - In a session held on Tuesday, the Agausian Magistrate Council, responsible for appointing and dismissing local and appellate judges, faced a pivotal vote concerning the nomination of a Constitutional appellate justice. The outcome revealed a deadlock, with a five-five split among the voting members.

This impasse followed the revelation of an intricate personal and professional relationship between the nominated judge, Vladimir Ṕardaže, and the notorious Čirveuloba family. Notably, in 2002, Ṕardaže worked for a law firm representing the Čirveulobas in tax and labor law litigation, establishing a close association. Numerous photographs captured him at various public and private events alongside the family and their associates.

During the initial nomination hearing, Judge Ṕardaže defended his ties to the Čirveulobas, asserting that he had initially acted within his rights as an attorney. He emphasized the prominence of the Čirveuloba family in the city, highlighting their significant involvement in the public and political spheres of Romda.

Facing questioning, Ṕardaže dismissed the situation as a political stunt, attributing it to retribution for his previous opinions and rulings. Notably, in 2013, while serving on the bench, he authored an opinion against then education minister, now president, Simon Aioviḱara’s attempts to restrict language services in post-secondary education.

With the initial vote resulting in a tie, Judge Ṕardaže is slated for another hearing, accompanied by a second round of voting. Should the second vote yield a similar deadlock, Chairman Mendeli, who is unable to cast a ballot in the first vote, will step in to break the tie.
