Moedani - Since the implementation of reforms beginning in 2006, language policy in Agausia has been a battleground pinning advocates of linguistic diversity against the government. The contentious issue revolves around the use of minority languages in schools and public institutions, with critics arguing that successive laws in 2012 and 2019 have suppressed linguistic autonomy, particularly for ethnic minorities. There are also concerns that current safeguards protecting minority languages are not being enforced in the country.
Greek speakers, constituting just a small fraction of Agausia's population, have been a loud and vital force at the forefront of the struggle. In the past Greek groups, like the Rights movement of Greek (ΚΙΔΕ) and Russian groups have worked together to advocate for their respective languages. They have also joined together to challenge laws and initiatives in the Agausian courts.
Adding pressure to this relationship has been the ever-present aggression from Russia, and recent years have witnessed an escalating divide between the Greek and Russian communities in Agausia. The once-solid alliance, forged in the common struggle for linguistic rights, now faces unprecedented strains as events in Ukraine continue to unfold into 2024.
"In the past, we've stood together, Greeks and Russians, united in our commitment to preserving our linguistic heritage in Agausia. The Rights movement of Greek (ΚΙΔΕ) has been a testament to that collaboration," said Andrâs Giorgi, a prominent member and national representative of ΚΙΔΕ. "However, recent geopolitical developments have forced us to reassess our alliances. Our primary focus remains the preservation of the Greek language and culture within Agausia, and we find ourselves navigating uncharted territory as we reevaluate our association with Russian counterparts."
In 2022, shortly after Putin’s invasion, the ΚΙΔΕ pulled their support for a lawsuit against the city of Odssa. Agausian law states any municipality that has a certain proportion of a minority population that there must be an appropriate amount of representation in public institutions and government - the ФРН accused the city of not meeting that quota and sued the city subsequently. The Russian Heritage Foundation (ФРН) has reacted harshly to the developing rift.
In response to this the ФРН said online, "We express profound disappointment at ΚΙΔΕ's decision to abandoned linguistic and cultural preservation. Instead, they want to dabble in unnecessary international politics and propaganda. This decision undermines the longstanding collaboration that has defined our joint efforts in Agausia and raises concerns about the sincerity of our shared commitment."
“The ethnic Greek population is right to worry about the appearance of working closely with Russian groups at this time,” Started professor Manana Orlovuresḱi, who teaches Russian History at Ganmanatleblobis University. “Agausian politics, like most post-Soviet states, tend to be quite nationalistic and Russia’s big brother attitude has only exacerbated this attitude.
