Conservatives Retain Seat After Special Election

Tavšesapari - In late June, Agausian Member of Parliament Ialčin Iašari announced his decision to retire from his parliamentary seat. He stated that he would not be returning to Tamara in August when parliament reconvenes after the summer recess, which occurred last Monday.

Last Thursday’s election saw six parties vying for seats: the Conservatives, Agausian Liberals, Social Democrats, Farmers' and Greens' Party, and the Communists. The results were decisive: the Conservatives secured 34% of the vote, the Agausian Liberals followed with 26%, the Social Democrats garnered 19%, the Farmers' and Greens' Party obtained 15%, and the Communists trailed with 6%.

Daviti Androniḱaš, a former staffer for Conservative party chair Igor Zurhab, is set to be inaugurated as the newest member of parliament on Monday, August 12.

Former MP Iašari, who was first elected to parliament in 2014 as an Agausian Liberal, has offered little explanation for his resignation. It has since come to light that he was offered a position at a political consulting firm associated with the far-right Spear Network and the Agausian Orthodox Church.

During his nearly decade-long tenure in parliament, Iašari frequently switched party affiliations, moving between the Agausian Liberals, Protection, and Conservative parties. Despite these shifts, he remained steadfast in promoting conservative values, branding himself as a "family first" politician. He was notably pro-Russian and pro-Putin, though he identified as an Agausian populist and nationalist.
