Bvaldâ - The Ministry of Agriculture, environment and food policy posted a statement on social media ordering that all citizens stay away from Lesmanis Laguna, a lagoon in the Kvevit Region. The closure was ordered after local officials detected a high level of pollutants - including high levels of chemical runoff from textile and fertilizer factories.
"The water quality has steadily declined due to high pollution inputs from tributaries, poor pollution control and industrial inputs. Agricultural runoff is also a source of pollution." Local health officials wrote in their official report to the ministry. The regional Governor pointed the blame at the village of Bvaldâ, a village in the Kvevit Region known for being the country's most polluted settlement.
The Governor Ksenâ Balani, a member of the Farmers' and Greens' Union, has requested an immediate investigation and has asked the government to expedite the clean-up process for the Lagoon. Lesmanis Laguna is vital for the existence of the local economy. Its waters provide food for humans and wildlife. Water from the lagoon is often recycled and used in industrial processes.
