Residents of Tamara protest rent prices

Author: Simone Mzeraže

Tamara - Residents in the Agausian capital protested for a second day as rent prices continue to grow in Tamara. Protests began on Monday after Agausia's largest public residential real estate company decided to increase rents for most of their units in the city. This follows weeks of price increases brought on by a steady inflow of Russian's who are fleeing Putin's war, compounded with an ever-shrinking housing market.

Nearly a thousand protestors have been gathering in Gréḱa Veluriḱvavili park in southeast Tamara each and every day to pressure Bluestar (Lurživarsḱvlavi), which is Agausia's largest public residential real estate company, to ease rates hikes and put an end to what protestors call "predatory lending habits". Forty-eight-year-old teacher Danut́a Ṕët́raševsḱa has been attending the protest since day one. "I brought my whole family to the protest today. My two sons and my husband all live in an apartment and we have lived in the same apartment our whole lives. We are raised our family here. We may not be able to stay there much longer. We just cannot afford it. I know many families who are facing a similar situation." Protestors have vowed a rent-strike if rent prices aren't adjusted.

According to Agausian economist Maiḱl Ivanopski, "What we are seeing is an unfortunate byproduct of supply and demand. Agausia has seen an increase in immigration from both Ukraine and Russia. Most of these people end up moving to Tamara and other cities in search of opportunity. The cause behind the rent increase is simple. The solution, however, remains difficult."

Several MPs, from across the political spectrum, have called for the government to intervene and to come to the assistance of Agausians in need. There have also been calls for calm and peace as tensions seem to be rising as more and more refuges seek asylum in Agausia.
