Former commune administrator loses appeal after being found guilty of graft charges

Tavšesapari - Former commune administrator of the village of Sḱvilр́eḱa Rkosani Ṕirut́kvi in the Aḱlos region, Malaḱ Nurâ, who had been found guilty of graft charges in 2020, has lost his appeal in the third circuit appellate court. On Friday the appeals court upheld the lower court's original verdict, stating that there was sufficient evidence to support the charges against Nurâ.

Nurâ had been accused of accepting bribes from local business owners in exchange for favorable treatment in contracts and permits. The trial had revealed that he had received thousands of euros, in local currency, in illicit payments and had used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle and to finance a failed political campaign.

The former commune administrator's attorney had argued that the evidence against his client was circumstantial and that there was not enough proof to support the charges. However, the appeals court found that the prosecution had presented a strong case, and that the jury's decision to convict Nurâ was reasonable.

Nurâ was sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay a large fine. He was also disqualified from holding public office in the future.

The case had received significant media attention, and many citizens expressed their satisfaction with the court's decision. "[The decision] is a victory for justice and a warning to other public officials that corruption will not be tolerated. The ruling also indicates that our law enforcement agencies are committed to root out corruption in society." Agausia's Prosecutor General, Aleksandre Daribanini, posted to his social media shortly after the ruling was announced.
